Summer is upon us yet again! The summer component of Kidsafe WA’s Seasonal Safety Campaign runs from December to February with the support of the WA Department of Health. The focus of the summer campaign is holiday safety, with Kidsafe WA asking parents and carers to ensure children Stay Safe this Summer.
Water activities, travel, festive celebrations and new toys are what make holidays and summer-time exciting for children and adults alike. Unfortunately, these factors are also what can increase children’s risk of injury.
During summer 2007-2008, 2926 children attended the PMH emergency department with an injury. This is 43 more than during the same period the previous year. The good news is that most of these injuries can be prevented.
Kidsafe WA will be spreading Summer Holiday Safety messages to local, rural and remote communities. Resources will be distributed to child and community health centres, health promotion officers, playgroups, child care centres, community and recreation centres throughout Western Australia. Presentations and educational sessions will be available to groups on request, with sessions able to be tailored to the needs of CaLD and Indigenous groups.
