2006 Safety in School Week

Be Kid Safe where you Live, Learn and Play!

12th to 16th June 2006

Why 'Safety in Schools Week' and injury prevention are important?

Each year more children die from INJURY than from cancer, asthma & infectious disease combined!

How many children are injured at your school in a week?

The 2006 'Safety in Schools Week' PINK Resource Folder contains safety and health activities from more than 20 Western Australian health promotion agencies. Look out for your copy being sent to your Principal in April 2006.

'Safety in Schools Week' can help reduce the incidence of injury through education. It encourages schools to address safety in a holistic manner, using the Health Promoting Schools Framework and activities linked to the Curriculum Framework. Why not hold a free dress say where children can dress up in the theme of safety e.g. dress as a person who skates safetly wearing elbow, knee and wrist guards and a helmet or dress as a life guard, police man, fireman etc. Alternatively see some of the suggestions below for how to get involved.

Have you started planning?
  • Inform all staff about the week so class time can be allocated for the program
  • Inform the school administration and the P&C or P&F about the week
  • Seek the support of the local community to help run safety activities during the week
  • Contact Kidsafe WA, participating agencies (a list will follow soon) or your local Public Health Unit Injury Prevention Officer

Your School can plan activities such as:
  • Classroom safety related activities using the pink 'Safety in Schools Week' Resource Folder
  • Promote 'Safety in Schools Week' in your school newsletter
  • Promote safety at your school assembly with a class doing a safety skit
  • Conduct a School Safety Audit
  • Organise a 'Walk to School Safely Day'
  • Safety book display in the library
