The Kidsafe Pool Party

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for Australian children under 5 years of age. Statistics from the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia’s
National Drowning Report show that in 2016/17, toddler drowning incidents increased by 32%. During this period, 29 Australian children aged 0 to 4
years drowned. The majority of these drowning incidents (45%) occurred in backyard swimming pools. While safety barriers can be effective in reducing
the risk of drowning incidents, evidence suggests that a large number of drowning deaths are the result of barriers that are faulty, or non-compliant
with Australian Standards.

Simply having a pool barrier and gate isn’t ‘job done’. We need all pool and spa owners to take 15 minutes to check and maintain their pool gate, barrier
and its surrounds. And what better way to do this than host a pool party? Really, only one person is invited to the pool party, and that’s you.
The party will only last a few minutes; it might be cold; it’s going to be uneventful; but it could save a life.

When the clocks change for summer, our pool party will take place across the nation, to ensure Australia’s pool are ready and safe for kids as
the weather warms up. If you don’t have a pool or spa, you can still partake by pledging to take action to keep kids safe in and around water! All you need is a tape measure, the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia’s checklist and 15 minutes.
