Kidsafe WA Travels to the Midwest

In May, Kidsafe WA travelled to the Midwest to deliver child injury prevention programs and services to aid communities in keeping country kids safe.

Thanks to the invaluable support of the Department of Health WA, Kidsafe WA staff delivered free primary school incursions, professional development workshops, and parent workshops to community organisations. Kidsafe WA also collaborated with ATCO in a school incursion to teach children gas safety in and around the home.

Children living in regional areas of Western Australia have safety concerns that differ from those living in the metro region and face unique challenges that put them at a higher risk of injury. These children are 2.6 times more likely to be injured in a transport accident and are at much higher risk of other severe injuries in comparison to children in metropolitan areas. Some of the challenges regional families face include long travel times to major towns, limited access to adequate health services, and a lack of childhood injury prevention services.

In addition to researching and analysing injury surveillance data, Kidsafe WA utilises regional trips to interact with, listen to, and learn from community members about preventable child injury hazards within their communities. To understand these challenges better, check out  Kidsafe WA’s Injuries to Children in Regional Locations Research Report.

Kidsafe WA travels to various regions throughout the year. To find out where we’re heading next and express your interest in having Kidsafe WA visit your area, check out our Region Visits page.
